– a space between monologue and dialogue: here memories develop a life of their own and create a social sculpture!

DIID, a blog by visual artist Antonya C. Wolfram, explores the locus of action of artworks that unfold in a continuous space of images, language and sound. DIID is dedicated to the question of the nature of digital identity in view of the analogue structure of human consciousness and concretises this approach using the example of memory.
Flowing, stepless, analogue remembering distinguishes humans from the digital possibilities that can be technically generated by them.
Remembering is one of the most sensitive areas of human existence; through the constant interaction of what is remembered with the respective present situation, it shapes a person’s identity and thus his or her individual background of experience. Association illustrates this vividly as a flowing process.

Artists of all disciplines are invited to react to the existing contributions precisely via this association of theirs, which leads them to their own analogue memories. They navigate between reception and production, between inner life and outer life, between their own insignificance and participation in the spectacle of society – and via the blog also between the analogue and the digital. Through the process of pausing and remembering, artists become part of a broader social process; they transform the memory that belongs only to them into an image, a short text or a short sound or video installation to share.
In playful encounters, the participants jointly create a digital memory sculpture that is completely different from the respective analogue memory process.
The digital identity of memory functions like a symbol, a word, a sentence that seeks understanding. Rigid in its digital fixation and equally interchangeable, its motor is association, enlivened by each individual, by each further recipient.

Digital identity means mediacy, but also communicability and thus corresponds in its function to transmission.
But only in the immediacy of consciousness does the emerging sculpture have an effect as a work. A sculpture that only unfolds its effect through participation is precisely what a social sculpture means.
The contributions are pillars, scaffolding, part of a whole. DIID creates a space that crystallises the collective memory of a social group and endures as a shared work: here it is the symbol of a culture of memory.
